Until now, Claude operated as two effectively separate products. Users could spend considerable time developing ideas, background context, and project details through conversations in chat — only to find that Claude Cowork had no recollection of any of it when the time came to take action. Every transition between research and execution required a full re-briefing. With this update, that friction is eliminated.

What Has Changed — The Technical Details

The core change is straightforward but impactful: Claude now shares a single memory layer across both its chat and Cowork environments. Whatever Claude learns in one context is automatically available in the other, without any manual transfer or re-input from the user.

Anthropic has also changed when memories are created. Previously, Claude would summarize a conversation only after it ended. Now, Claude adds topics to its memory in real time as a conversation unfolds. This means that information is updated and shared between chat and Cowork continuously — even while a chat session is still ongoing — enabling a much more fluid back-and-forth between the two modes of working.

In addition, Anthropic is now exposing the memory layer directly to users. This means individuals can read, edit, or delete the information Claude has retained on any topic, giving users meaningful control over what the assistant knows and acts upon.

Anthropic has taken a privacy-first approach to what gets stored by default. Claude will not automatically retain personal or sensitive information, including:

On iOS and Android, users will need to update their app to the latest version to access the new memory capabilities.
